The Coda (Downtown Victoria) Friday Speakeasy Vibes, Vocal Jazz & Swing Dance - Celebrate Mardi Gras
Friday, March 7, 2025, 1830 - 2030
Come to early set at the Coda at 751 View/Blanshard on Friday, March 7 to enjoy a cocktail, vocal jazz, and a swing dance. The evening will led by the vocalist nominated for Western Canadian Music Awards' 2024 Jazz Artist of the Year and who recently won the All About Jazz poll for Fav Living Jazz Vocalist. Don your cutest vintage attire, hat, or jewelry, and order an old-fashioned for retro vintage fun. A variety of favourite jazz standards, swing era hits, and grooves will be covered by this A+ quintet including swing, jive, foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, salsa, waltz, quickstep, and tango... or just sit back and watch. Angela Verbrugge has spent the last three years performing around the world. Her music career has led her from St John's Newfoundland to Tofino, Germany to France, Luxembourg to the UK, and from Japan to Taiwan. For her debut at the Coda, she has selected the most rhythmic and bluesy jazz musicians on Vancouver Island to help turn the Coda into your romper room to burn off the week's stress. Fri-yay with us!
Angela, who relocated to Victoria in 2019, previously would perform this annually to critical acclaim in Vancouver area. The last two years whenever she has performed at Hermann's it has sold out so gather your dance and jazz fan friends groups and get your tickets now at the advanced discount price. She has formed a classic piano trio of Victoria's finest and most swingin musicians to accompany her for this occasion plus gifted jazz trumpet Owen Chow. Dr Tony Genge is a masterful jazz pianist well-versed in the swingin 40s style. Pag's fav jazz bassist Scott White spent many years performing music in Cirque de Soleil and in Germany. Muscular and hard swinging Nanaimo-based jazz drummer, (Hans) "the Groovin" Verhoeven will be sure to keep your hand and feet moving to the beat.
"Angela's music brings joy. You can hear that Angela is imaginative, but her singing rests securely on deep emotional understanding. She understands the song, not only as notes and syllables on paper, but also the heart-messages it sends us. She conveys tenderness, thoughtfulness, wit, and ardor: emotions and perceptions aimed right at us through her very human voice, its phrase-ending vibrato signifying a sweet earnestness. Her art is her own, and she offers rare pleasures." JAZZLIVES "
