Sweet Potato Comfort Pie's 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday of Service in Golden Valley on 19 January 2025
Sunday, January 19, 2025, 1330 - 1630
Presented by Sweet Potato Comfort Pie organization, this event is a community celebration of Dr. King and his enduring dream of Beloved Community. It will feature music, artists, food and refreshments, and time for audience members to engage in facilitated "story circle" conversations about racial healing. Since the first event 10 years ago, the event has grown from an average of 80 to 400 participants.

The holiday weekend of service begins with community members gathering on Saturday to bake 96 sweet potato comfort pies, the number that represents Dr. King's age if he were alive today. These pies become an integral part of Sunday's program as attendees engage in discussion and decide whom to uplift or honor with a pie.

A recognition pre-program kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will honor several community figures with the Upholding Our Beloved Community Awards. During this time, attendees will also be able to view SPCP's photo exhibit, Character Values: Upholding Our Beloved Community.

Audience Engagement event, 2:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m., will feature musical artist Jamela Pettiford and the GQ Unit, pianist Mari Harris, Shir Harmony Jewish Women's Choir, and the Heart and Soul Drum Academy. Youth winners of the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Contest will share their art. Attendees will enjoy free food and refreshments and take part in "story circle" facilitated conversations at their tables to further connect the community and help people hear from a variety of perspectives about the issues of our time. Participants will also discuss whom to honor with a pie. Pies will be distributed in the following days. In February, attendees will gather again to share their "pie stories" about gifting or receiving those pies.

The event is free and open to the public.
