Scary Chairy Orchard
Tuesday, October 1, 2024 -- Thursday, October 31, 2024, 0800 - 1700
This exhibit pays tribute to the original Chairy Orchard and will be an ongoing feature during Denton's 31 Days of Halloween for years to come. The Scary Chairy Orchard will showcase individual chairs designed and decorated by community members in a Halloween theme. Participants can include individuals, groups, and businesses. All are welcome to participate, but registration is required. Registration will be open from Aug.1 to Sept.15, 2024.
Artists are encouraged to find chairs in need of a creative reimagining. Chairs should be made of plastic, wood, or metal. Unfortunately, we cannot accept chairs made of upholstery or other porous materials. While we welcome artistically rendered creepy-crawlies that fit the Halloween theme, we ask that real creatures be kept out of our facilities!
Tone, Content, and Materials
Chairs should lean toward the kooky, goofy, and cartoonish aspects of Halloween—think more Addams Family and less Texas Chainsaw Massacre. As these chairs will be displayed in public areas, they should be suitable for viewers of all ages. Chairs must be made of nontoxic materials and designed to avoid posing any hazards. Participants are encouraged to think outside the box and use a variety of materials and mixed media.
This exhibit is sponsored by Thistle Creative Reuse, a local secondhand art and craft store, which will donate $10 of store credit to every registered participant for purchasing materials.
Displaying the Chairs
The Parks and Recreation Department will display the Scary Chairy Orchard chairs in the courtyard at City Hall. Participants will deliver their completed chairs to the Civic Center during the assigned drop-off days. While every effort will be made to treat the chairs carefully, they may incur damage during transportation or while on display outdoors and exposed to the elements. Participants may take their chairs home after the exhibit or choose to donate them for future years of the Scary Chairy Orchard.
Contest
All chairs will be entered into a contest to win in the following categories: Most Creative Chair, Best Group/Business Chair, and Best Individual Chair. Winners will be announced on Oct. 24, 2024.
