Remembrance Day: Pop, Swing and Jazz of WW2 - Port Alberni Nov 10, 2024
Sunday, November 10, 2024, 1800 - 2000
Traditional pop and jazz of the late 1930s and 1940s WW2 era - the songs of love and longing, playful flirting, and swingin’ distraction, performed by Angela Verbrugge and the In the Mood Quartet. This music defined a decade and uplifted hearts through dark wartime days. This Remembrance Day, join us to bob your head, tap your toe, reflect, and take a sombre moment to remember those who have lost and will lose their lives fighting for peace in a unique format. Songs from The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Vera Lynn and more like We’ll Meet Again, For All We Know, Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don’t Under the Apple Tree and You’ll Never Know.
Angela, who relocated to Victoria in 2019, previously would perform this annually to critical acclaim in Vancouver area. The last two years at Hermann’s have sold out so gather your groups and make a reservation. She has formed a classic piano trio of Victoria’s finest and most swingin musicians to accompany her for this occasion. British-Canadian pianist Nick Peck is a masterful musiciab well-versed in the swingin 40s style. Qualicum Beach jazz bassist often called to accompany and record with NYC touring jazz artists, Ken Lister and popular Nanaimo-based jazz drummer, playful rhymatician Graham Villette will be sure to keep toes a tappin!
The event includes a special reading by Angela of the work military historian and Vancouver Island based author Susan Raby-Dunne. Susan is the author or numerous books including John McCrae: Beyond Flanders Fields, and works as a First and Second World War battlefield and historical tour guide.
Entrance by gratuity at the door. The quartet is supported entirely by your generosity. A full bar is available. You are welcome to bring your own snacks, but kindly don’t leave garbage or mess for event volunteers/the venue owner.
“Angela’s music brings joy. You can hear that Angela is imaginative, but her singing rests securely on deep emotional understanding. She understands the song, not only as notes and syllables on paper, but also the heart-messages it sends us. She conveys tenderness, thoughtfulness, wit, and ardor: emotions and perceptions aimed right at us through her very human voice, its phrase-ending vibrato signifying a sweet earnestness. Her art is her own, and she offers rare pleasures.” JAZZLIVES “
