Legendary glam punks Rachel Stamp were formed in 1994 when vocalist/bassist David Ryder Prangley moved to London from South Wales and met guitarist Will Crewdson. The pair played live shows with friends Jon Lee (Feeder) on drums and Thighpaulsandra (Coil, Spiritualized) on keyboards. After only four gigs Rachel Stamp signed to WEA Records and recruited Cliff Harris on drums and Mike Rowe on keyboards. Amid a backdrop of Britpop and Nu Metal, the band stood out with their androgynous image and unique combination of high energy rock and synthesisers (which Ryder Prangley described as "Black Sabbath meets Prince"). They recorded an album titled Fight The Force Of Evil, which remains unreleased as the band were dropped from their contract after Clive Black, who had signed the band, left the label. Harris and Rowe left the band soon after.
Undeterred, Crewdson and Ryder Prangley recruited drummer Robin Guy and released the single ‘My Sweet Rose' on their own Bitch Vinyl label. The single reached the top 100 in the Official UK Singles Chart. Canadian born keyboard player Shaheena Dax joined the band as they started regularly touring the UK and building a loyal fanbase, many of whom adopted the band's visual style of brightly dyed hair and flamboyant makeup, calling themselves the "Cult of Rachel Stamp". Favourable coverage from magazines such as Kerrang!, Melody Maker and Metal Hammer followed, as well as outraged headlines in The Sun who baulked at the band's "gender bender" image.

In 2000 Rachel Stamp released Hymns For Strange Children, their first official album. It was recorded and mixed in 7 days with John Fryer (HIM, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie) as producer. The album went to the top of the NME's Independent Chart and received rave reviews, with Kerrang! featuring the band on its front cover. The album tour climaxed with the band headlining the 2000 capacity Astoria Theatre in London, where they had previously opened for No Doubt and Cheap Trick. A live album Stampax was released and hit the top ten of the UK Independent Chart.

The band next signed to Pure Stirling Records, who released the album Oceans of Venus in the UK. The album received strong critical praise and was subsequently released in the US by Captiva Records, and in Germany through Sony Music. The video for the single 'Black Cherry' was playlisted on music channels MTV and VH1, and the single reached the Official UK Singles Chart as well as topping the UK Independent Chart. After difficulties with their record label and management, Robin Guy left the band before Rachel Stamp headed to the USA to play as part of the 'United II' tour featuring Pigface and Dope. Shortly after this the band became inactive for a few years despite never officially splitting up. In 2009 Robin returned to the group for a sold out headlining show at London's O2 Academy Islington to support their ‘best of' compilation album, Now I'm Nailed To Your Bedroom Wall I've Only Got Myself To Blame. This was followed by a short UK tour in late 2009. The band has played various sold out shows between then and now.

In 2023 Easy Action Records announced they would be releasing Hymns For Strange Children for the first time ever on vinyl on April 14th.
