Proddy Mat Making Workshop
Saturday, November 4, 2023, 1000 - 1600
Create your own proddy/clippy mat using leftover and recycled scraps of fabrics to create your own decorative and functional small rug.
You will learn how this can be made at little cost, what tools can be used and how to finish and bind edges. A frame will be provided to work on and take home to complete your masterpiece.
Proddy mats are made by prodding or poking strips of fabric through burlap or linen from the backside. The mats are a fabulous way of upcycling unwanted clothes and textiles into floor rugs or wall hangings. These mats, rugs and hangings were known in different places by various names, including 'proddy', 'clippy', 'hooky', 'proggie' and 'clootie mat'.
The tradition of making 'rag' or 'thrift' rugs became widespread during the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century. However by the 1920s the craft was dying out as it was associated with hard times. The necessity for thrift during World War II brought a brief revival and interest in the craft grew again in the 1980s.
