Palestrina and the End of the Renaissance
Saturday, June 15, 2024, 1930 - 2120
Palestrina's enormous influence and importance in 16th century music was honoured in 1584 by the composition of "Missa Cantantibus organis Cæcilia", a remarkable collaboration by seven of Palestrina's colleagues and students. Yet only ten years later the great composer was dead and a seismic shift was underway in sacred music in Rome. This fascinating programme demonstrates why Palestrina was so highly regarded, and showcases the innovative new style of sacred music that would ultimately supplant his perfection of counterpoint.
Featuring music by Palestrina, Claudio Monteverdi, Ludovico Grossi da Viadana, Agostino Aggazzari, and Vincenzo Ugolini.
