Ozarks Engaged: Citizenry and the Future of Our Communities
Thursday, April 3, 2025 -- Saturday, April 5, 2025, 1900 - 2000
The symposium opens on Thursday, April 3, with An Evening with LeVar Burton, a sold-out in-person and livestream keynote at the Gillioz Theatre (7 - 8 PM). Legendary actor, storyteller, director, literacy champion, and former host of Reading Rainbow, LeVar Burton, will discuss literacy's role in civic engagement, setting the stage for deeper conversations on how citizenry and participation shape our communities. Those unable to attend in person can watch via livestream.
On Friday, April 4, the symposium continues with The Power of Story: Literacy, Citizenry, and Community Impact at the Historic Fox Theatre (4:30-8 PM). This event features a screening of SENTENCED, a powerful documentary produced and narrated by 4x NBA Champion Stephen Curry, revealing the realities of the childhood illiteracy crisis. Following the film, a panel of literacy leaders and a film producer will discuss how literacy can break cycles of poverty and uplift Ozark communities. During the pre-event reception, attendees can connect with regional organizations working to close literacy gaps and strengthen community ties, with options to get involved.
On Saturday, April 5, the symposium will host several community conversations:
"Civics in Action" (10 - 11:15 AM | Drew Lewis Foundation at The Fairbank) - A panel highlighting citizen-driven initiatives shaping the region's future.
"Engaged Neighbor, Engaged Citizenry" (11:15 AM - 12:15 PM | Drew Lewis Foundation at The Fairbank) - A discussion on how strengthening neighborly connections fosters civic engagement and resilience.
"Engaging the Next Generation" (2 - 3:15 PM | Creamery Arts Center) - A panel exploring how intergenerational connections strengthen civic participation.
"Civics on Tap" (4:15 - 5:15 PM | Mother's Brewing Company) - A fun, interactive closing event with activities and discussions on civics and government in a relaxed, social setting.
