Orange County's Juneteenth Celebration
Friday, June 14, 2024, 1000 - 2100
We invite all community members to join us for the Orange County Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 14th. This year's celebration theme, "Embracing our Connections to Land, Body, and Spirit," is an acknowledgment of the journey embarked on by those formerly enslaved and their descendants to remember, restore, and reimagine their connections to the lands that they inhabit, their autonomy of being, and their creative capacities to express themselves.
Our Juneteenth celebration will convene on Friday, June 14th, 2024, at the David Price Farmers' Market Pavilion at 10:00 a.m. for an opening ceremony to honor the legacy of the not-so-distant past and recognize the resiliency of a community that dared to dream of FREEDOM. We will have acknowledgments and offerings led by Beverly Payne of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation and Community Organizer and Advocate, Chris Faison. Dr. Sonny Kelly of Legacy Heirs Productions will grace us with an excerpt from "The Ongoing Fight for Freedom: Stories of NC Black Veterans." This program will be accompanied by the musical offerings of Rachel Royal, Fahari Leader of Bump the Triangle, Congo Vibes, led by Pline Mounzeo and Charles Newkirk.
In the afternoon, we will reconvene at the Orange County Public Library from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. for the "Roots and Resilience: The Legacy and Future of Black Farming" program, which will include lunch and a panel discussion with local Black farmers, Kamal Bell of Sankofa Farms, Howard Allen of Faithfull Farms, natural food-way healer Angela Davis of Homeschools of Color, NC, and Black agriculture advocate, Deon Temne. Our follow-up workshops will be led by the Orange County Office of Equity and Inclusion and Angela Davis.
We will close out our celebration in the evening at the Eno Arts Mill for a Joyous Celebration from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The evening will include musical offerings by SHAMBO MEDINA and DJ COMPLEX. The vendor market will consist of the services and offerings of businesses across our community. Resident artists of the Eno Arts Mill will open their studios for community art workshops for all to enjoy. Yagg Sii Tenn and Souls Kitchen will provide meal offerings. We will have many games and activities for YOUTH OF ALL AGES, so COME OUT and SHOW US WHAT YOUR JOY IS ALL ABOUT!
