Music Sunday Celebration - Fred Johnson, Director, UU Falmouth 10-11 AM June 2 Free Admission
Sunday, June 2, 2024, 1000 - 1100
UU Falmouth and its musicians invites the public to enjoy its annual Music Sunday Celebration, "Music of the Stars," free of charge. The 18-person choir, directed by Mr. Johnson, will present a program of readings, anthems, hymns, and instrumentals as part of a Sunday service featuring music rather than a sermon.
Music Sunday is a very special event at UU Falmouth because it emphasizes the profound importance of music in the congregation's spiritual journey, according to Mr. Johnson.
Music and readings will reflect this deep connection between music and spirituality. Choir selections will include "Illumina oculos meos" by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, "Keepers of a Light" by Tom Benjamin, Betsy Jo Angebranndt's "Out of the Stars," "Pass on the Light" by Clif Hardin, and Jacob Narverud's "Ad Astra."
Frederick Johnson has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Voice and Music Education. He has been Choir and Music Director at UU Falmouth for twenty years. He taught music in public schools for 34 years, 27 of those in the Falmouth Schools. Frederick was a long-time conductor of the Falmouth Chorale and, most recently, a teaching artist in voice and piano for the Cape Symphony at the Falmouth Campus. He lives in Hatchville with his wife Irene.
Due to an injury to UU Falmouth's staff pianist Nancy Wendlandt, Nancy Sparklin will accompany the choir and perform the prelude and other music. Nancy Sparklin has had a busy career as a pianist, organist, music director, vocal coach, and private piano teacher. She currently plays keyboard for the Cape Cod Moonlighters and lives in Rochester.
The Unitarian Universalist congregation welcomes visitors and serves the Upper Cape towns of Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee and Sandwich, and beyond.
Admission is free. The meeting house is accessible for people with disabilities. More information is available at uufalmouth.org.
