Michelle Isaac's Moshe's Dream is a heartfelt tribute to her grandfather, "Moshe," composed after her 99-year-old grandfather dreamed that they had started a klezmer band together.
Valerie Coleman's Opus Serena honors the life and achievements of Serena Williams in a dynamic concertino for bassoon and orchestra. Portraying Williams' rise through the lens of a tennis match, the piece features the bassoon soloist as Serena, facing off against the full orchestra. Acclaimed bassoonist Monica Ellis performs in this Chicago premiere.
Johannes Brahms offers a poignant expression of his unrequited love for esteemed pianist and composer Clara Schumann in his "Poco Allegretto" from his Symphony No. 3. With its tender, introspective atmosphere, the movement captures emotions he never spoke aloud but felt from age 20 until the end of his life.
The "Adagietto" from Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 is a sublime and deeply moving work renowned for its emotional expanse and ethereal beauty. Composed as a musical love letter to his beloved wife, Alma, its serene and melancholic character reflects the profound emotions of love and longing.
