Local Heroes and Heroines
Sunday, April 6, 2025, 1400 - 1600
Merryoaks Community Hall is delighted to announce that Denis Fox, local historian and artist, will be presenting his talk on local heroes and heroines, 'Beyond the Call of Duty' at Merryoaks Community Hall on Sunday 6th April at 2 pm.
The talk features several local stories of heroism:
Seaham Lifeboat Disaster in 1962;
Sister Kate Maxey MM, RRC, FNM the nurse from Spennymoor who helped wounded British soldiers in field hospitals during WW1;
The Aycliffe Angels munition workers;
Sergeant Hannah the youngest person in the RAF at 18 years of age to receive the VC in WW2;
Lucy Loftus the great female engineer whose famous painting of her by Dame Laura Knight inspired many women to help in the war effort.
Those of you who attended Denis's 2024 talk , The Battle of Britain in the North East of England, will recall what an enjoyable and informative afternoon that was and Denis's 2025 talk promises to be just as good.
For your information, the poster is of Denis's painting showing the Seaham Lifeboat "George Elmy" which will be displayed at the event.
Prints from this painting have been sold by the RNLI to buy equipment which has helped save the lives of people at sea.
Tickets for this talk, priced at £5 which includes refreshments, are now on sale.
They can be bought from the Community Hall in cash or send a message to reserve tickets and arrange for bank payment.
Merryoaks Community Hall is at Park House Road, Durham, DH1 3QF
