EUGENE MAKUTA (Message from Grupo Lokito)
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our vocalist Eugene Makuta after a short illness on Sunday 18th August 2024.
Amongst projects, he was a founder member of Grupo Lokito and integral to their success and delighted audiences wherever he played.
Eugene Makuta was a much respected and loved musician in the musical community in the UK and internationally.
Our thoughts are with Makuta's partner, his family and his many, many friends.
Go well, Eugene Makuta.
About EUGENE MAKUTA (written by Mfumu Vata)
Eugene Makuta used to sing in a band from Matadi and when Big Stars came there in 1994 to perform they did the first part. It is there that Defao discovered him and him joining Big Stars. It took a bit time for him to have a place, but he became a key-member when Defao returned alone from the Europe-tour in 1995. Makuta made his name known when did a duet with Defao in the rumba song Pis-Cass from the Amour Interdit album.
In 1997, he participated to the Sala-Noki album where his vocal in Defao's classic song Sala Noki had a lot of succes, him appearing in numerous video clips of that album and the albums that followed on sites like youtube (Copinage and Tremblement de Terre) also helped a lot by gaining popularity.
In the album Bana Congo he sung lead in 3 songs (I am not sure if all songs were credited to him). The songs were Faux Croyante, Lomas and Mambu na Tembe. Like most members of Big Stars that went on tour in US, he preferred to settle in UK, when Defao decided to disband Big Stars in 2000.
