Kirtan with Madhava Naidoo and Jahnavi Harrison
Saturday, June 22, 2024, 1900 - 2130
Kirtan is a timeless practice of call and response devotional singing. Kirtan builds deep connection and transforms the heart like nothing else. We can't wait to share this with you.
About Madhava Naidoo:
Madhava Naidoo was born in 1973 on the island of Mauritius. He was five years old when his parents became fully committed Krishna devotees. Straightaway, they gave him his first mridanga (Indian clay drum), and, motivated by them, Madhava chanted 4 rounds of japa every day until he was 13 years old. As a teenager, he rebelled. After some bumps and wild detours, his fascination with music led him, at the age of 18, to ask his parents to send him to Vrindavan, the holy city of Krishna. He hoped to join the kirtan party there. In 1992, on the very first day Madhava arrived in Vrindavan, he met Aindra das, the leader of the 24-hour kirtan, who asked him to join the kirtan party. Every day for the next 5 years Madhava would play mridanga for Aindra das. At the end of 1996 he went back to Mauritius. Barely two years later, Madhava returned to Vrindavan for a brief stay and, before leaving, received the instruction from Aindra das to "always chant Hare Krishna, even if you have to do it to the four walls-and never stop practicing your mridanga."
About Jahnavi Harrison:
Jahnavi Harrison is a musician, writer, artist and practitioner of bhakti-yoga. She spent her formative years at Bhaktivedanta Manor in England, in a rich environment where mantra chanting and sacred art were a part of every day life. With a background in Western and Eastern classical music and dance, she has pursued a path of self realisation and service through artistic expression. For over 15 years she has offered her voice and violin playing in the performance of sacred music and call-and-response mantra kirtan, in venues as diverse as corporates, schools, prisons, theaters, hospitals, yoga studios and even temples. She aspires to create art and facilitate experiences which heal, uplift and nourish the spirit. Over the years Jahnavi has collaborated regularly with artists such as Deva Premal and Miten, Jai Uttal, Krishna Das, Snatam Kaur, Gaura Vani, and most recently, with Willow Smith with the EP 'Rise' (2020). Now based in California; she regularly leads live gatherings, sound bath experiences, concerts and retreats.
