KAYODE'S Solo Art Show- HOPE
Friday, September 13, 2024 -- Saturday, September 14, 2024, 1100 - 1700
Welcome to KAYODE'S solo Art Show - H O P E on FRIDAY, September 13 and SATURDAY, September 14! Join us for a day filled with creativity and inspiration at the Little Studio in the Fine Arts Building.
This show features stunningly realistic drawings with a fresh perspective on things that we may see and use in everyday life. I have chosen to highlight these things because they reflect some of our deepest dreams and insecurities; they hold space for both performance and vulnerability. I explored the themes of this show from my experiences as a black, female artist as well as the experiences of the diverse people around me. With the show, 'HOPE’, I want to create an immersive experience that explores various emotional states and our resilient spirit. Each art piece stands alone, but also contributes to a larger commentary; this work helps piece together what was once broken.
I hope these drawings of everyday items will encourage you to introspect upon your own inner life and outer worlds. How do they harmonize? How do they clash? How do they invite hope in our life?
Balloons are known to represent hope and joy, usually the flashpoint of parties, well-loved, enjoyed by people. I use balloons in my work to highlight the performative, and yet genuine, nature of entertainment and socializing. I showcase trash bags for its "introverted" nature - often isolated, ignored, and not the center of attention at parties, yet they embody functionality and purpose. Both of these items are beautiful in unique ways; however, society's narrow focus consistently elevates one above the other.
My featured comic book strips depict "superheroes" at some of their most vulnerable moments. These strong individuals represent the people in our own lives who help rescue and hold us up, but they are not always strong enough to save themselves. Even superheroes need help, care, and love. By exploring the humanity of superheroes, you can see they 'break 'sometimes; they are vulnerable as well.
Additionally, in this show, mannequins serve as a hollowed out representation of us - they represent an unfeeling and disconnected part of ourselves. Sometimes, we numb certain areas of our lives because the pain is too great or because it is easier to dissociate. We vacate our own bodies. But if we listen closely, there is a melody, perhaps a tune not yet written, that can be a balm for our souls and bring us back to life.
I want to help shatter the armored glass of disconnection, disassociation, isolation, and hopelessness. This art begins to crack a light into that darkness.
I truly hope each and every one of you will enjoy the show as much as I loved creating it.
The event kicks off on Fri Sep 13 2024 at 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM - Sat Sep 14 2024 at 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM , so mark your calendars and come support local art! Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in something special. I really look forward to seeing you there!
