Ice Cream Social and Mock Election Exercise with Ranked Choice Voting
Saturday, September 28, 2024, 1300 - 1400
Southwest Hills Residential League and the League of Women Voters invite the community to a Ranked Choice Voting education event and Ice Cream Social on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m.
Ranked Choice Voting in Portland this November: Amplifying your voice
This year, Portlanders are using a new voting system to elect the city's Mayor, Auditor and City Council. Instead of a primary followed by a general election, these positions will all be elected in a single November election using ranked-choice voting (RCV). Melanie will summarize the changes, then dive deeply into how to vote under the new system, to ensure that your vote counts to the greatest extent possible. This will be a strictly non-partisan, interactive workshop, including live voting in a mock RCV election.
Melanie Billings-Yun chairs the Portland League of Women Voters' ranked-choice voting team and is a member of the League's Charter Education Coordinating Committee. Previously, she was co-chair of the Portland Charter Commission, which crafted the changes to the city's form of government and electoral system that were approved by voters in 2022 and will be implemented this November.
For this free event open to the public, we suggest families RSVP in advance by emailing their three favorite ice cream flavors to contact@swhrl.org.
Parents must supervise their own children on the playground adjacent to the Parish Hall. A wheelchair ramp for easier access to the Parish Hall is located in the upper parking lot at the SW corner of SW Dosch and SW Patton. Private parking is available.
