History in the Shadow of the Tower Lecture Series: The Discovery of Fort Mose

Dr. Lori Lee, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Flagler College, and Mr. Chuck Meide, Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), lead this session sharing the important findings from the archaeological fieldwork conducted at the Fort Mose site. Fort Mose is the first settlement of freed Africans in North America originally founded by the Spanish in 1738 as the northernmost defenses of St. Augustine. Word of the fort's existence spread throughout the slaveholding South and even helped launch the Stono slave revolt in South Carolina. This lecture will highlight what we have learned about the settlement from archaeology conducted on both land and water.
