From Oakland to the Stars Chabot Space and Science Center Observation Deck Re-Opening
Saturday, April 26, 2025, 1000 - 1600
Chabot Space and Science Center invites the public to the opening of its newly renovated, 15,000 square-foot Observation Deck during its From Oakland to the Stars weekend scheduled Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27 from 10 am to 4 pm. The weekend kicks off exciting new features and exhibits on Chabot's popular outdoor Observation Deck that surrounds its three world-class telescopes, providing fun, participatory opportunities for all ages to learn how observation-both on the ground and in space-are fundamental to science.
The April 26 and 27 From Oakland to the Stars weekend is the official opening of Chabot's newly renovated Observation Deck-an exciting transformation that blends astronomy, nature and hands-on learning in a beautiful outdoor interactive space. The space will feature new observation tools, engaging hands-on interactive exhibits and live pop-up demonstrations, and the opening of a special astrophotography display showcasing breathtaking images captured by amateur astrophotographers from the Bay Area. A portion of the exhibition will feature astrophotography by late Chabot astronomer Conrad Jung in honor of his years of dedication and service to Chabot and the science community.
As part of the weekend celebration, Chabot will present a showcase of its high school student volunteers, the Galaxy Explorers, focusing on the latest projects that highlight their innovative work and hands-on contributions to the world of astronomy, engineering, environmental science and digital media. In addition, Chabot will host a panel discussion featuring local astrophotographers and scientists from the Space Telescope Science Institute. The weekend will also offer a chance to enjoy live music including a Saturday night concert "I'll Show You the Night", become a "solar detective" through hands-on demonstrations, take guided hikes through the nearby redwoods and more.
Highlights of the newly renovated space include a new exhibition of Astrophotography by amateur Bay Area astronomer/photographers with a wealth of interpretive materials focusing on what's in the photos and why they are important. Visitors will be inspired that real people like themselves can participate in and make contributions to real science.
