Kate Kleinert was wooed on Facebook by a handsome man who said he was a surgeon, but months later she was out $39,000. Now she shares her story to help others avoid scams. She will share her story and professionals will provide fraud prevention tips during a Scam Jam on May 9 in Fredericksburg.
Kleinert, who lives in a Philadelphia suburb, will share the stage with former San Diego Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood and other speakers at the Scam Jam.
To empower people 50 and older to protect themselves against fraud, AARP Virginia is bringing together law enforcement and other local officials for a free community Scam Jam event from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Thursday, May 9 at Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal St., Fredericksburg VA 22401. A shred truck will be on site from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. for free destruction of personal documents.
Attendees will learn the red flags to spot scams and protect themselves and their families from scammers' tactics, the steps to report fraud that helps warn others and more.
The keynote speaker Shawn Smith, state director of the Senior Medicare Patrol, will help attendees understand how to recognize Medicare fraud. Representatives of Adult Protective Services, the Fredericksburg Sheriff's Office, Senator Tara Durant and Delegate Joshua Cole.
