Fed Recognition of Wampanoag Tribe - Ramona Peters & Jim Peters Tell the Story 1-3PM Sept 7 Falmouth
Saturday, September 7, 2024, 1300 - 1500
Ramona Peters and Jim Peters of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe will walk the audience through the history that led to the Tribe’s seeking Federal Recognition and gaining it in 2007.
Ramona Peters is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, and the founder and current president of the Native Land Conservancy. Much of her work with the Tribe has focused on repatriation, indigenous rights, land and cultural preservation, and other endeavors to expand the Wampanoag identity.
Jim Peters is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, serves as executive director of the Massachusetts Commission on Indian Affairs, and is a member of the Plymouth 400 Commission.
L.I.N.K., short for Linking Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Knowledge, is a local non-profit organization seeking pathways to understanding and reciprocity between the non-Native community and the Wampanoag Nation. They also teach nonNatives about the true history and culture of the Wampanoag people. This program, a collaboration between L.I.N.K. and UU Falmouth, is an effort to change the current environment of societal injustice and to heal relations. The talk is part of a year-long educational series. More information can be found at the website: linkcapecod.org.
This event is supported by The Fund for Science and The Falmouth Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation.
The next program in this year-long educational series will feature Paula Peters speaking about the "Wampum Belt," sharing "Stories from the Shells of Native America" from 1 to 3 PM Saturday, September 28, also at UU Falmouth.
