SAMO Fund will be hosting an exclusive screening of the documentary, To Right a Wrong: The Story of Ballard Mountain, on June 11 at the headquarters auditorium from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will kick off with a cocktail networking hour, followed by a screening of the film and a panel featuring Ballard family descendant Ryan Ballard, Moorpark College professor of history Patty Colman, National Park Service (NPS) Public Affairs Officer Ana Cholo and former NPS Cultural Resources Ranger Austin Ringelstein.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

This short-form documentary is directed by award-winning filmmaker Darius Dawson, penned by Ana Cholo, narrated by actor Kokayi Ampah and edited by Austin Rourke. The film is a collaborative effort funded by SAMO Fund and the NPS, with funding also supported by the Cities of Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village.

The documentary explores the journey of John Ballard, who blazed a trail as the first Black homesteader in the Santa Monica Mountains during the 1850s. Despite enduring severe discrimination due to his race, John and his family persevered, building an extraordinary life as pillars of the community.
