About Our Program:
Charles Dickens, the Victorian author, who helped engender many Christmas traditions, was also responsible for modernizing laws to prevent child labor, improve education and thwart poverty. He was able to do this through his immensely popular books. This popularity was due to his books initially being serialized in periodicals, during which time, Dickens developed a rapport with his readers through his use of humor. Linwood, a classics scholar, has read all but two of Dickens's extensive repertoire. He will quote extensively from Dickens's prolific works, so our meeting promises to be a humorous and informative evening!
About Our Speaker:
Linwood Davis majored in Journalism at Washington and Lee. During his twenty years of teaching high school Latin, he led at least 8 award winning "Latin Clubs", Junior Classical League, teams from small, rural localities to National Junior Classical League Competitions. He was a civilian procurement contracting officer in the US Army, a mostly paralegal function. Posted at (then) Fort Lee, he taught courses on how to write contracting documents for procuring goods and services for the military. Over the course of nearly a decade, Linwood was intermittently stationed in Germany as head contracting procurement specialist for the Department of Defense for educational activity for dependents and schools. He organized the logistics of procuring supplies, books, and buses for schools educating military dependents. He also contracted training for teachers in the schools run for military dependents. His capacity to write a tight contract has transferred into concise and informative Torch presentations- This one will have a healthy dollop of humor to get our Fredericksburg Torch Club off to a HAPPY 2024!

About the Fredericksburg Torch Club:
We provide an opportunity for persons of different professions and disciplines to meet monthly for the interchange of professional knowledge, ideas, opinions, and fellowship. It is not a service society, and does not champion a specific cause. See more at Torch.org, the website for International Association of Torch Clubs, our parent organization.

About Our Venue:
The Alpine Chef in the Stube Room, enjoy a fabulous cash bar and a sumptuous Dutch treat dinner, which will include selections from the Wild Game Menu, or from their extensive regular menu. The Stube Room is an elegant and intimate gathering place, which allows attendees the opportunity to learn and discuss interdisciplinary topics, and supports various audio visual formats. Invite family and friends, and come join us for an intriguing evening of insights on the social justice impact of literature, intellectual fellowship, and fine dining.

About The International Association of Torch Clubs:
Torch clubs provide a forum where people from different professions and interests can meet in a convivial setting. Monthly dinners offer enjoyable meals and good fellowship, with spirited discussion on many interesting topics. A Torch paper is the main focus of the club meeting. The presenter is usually a club
member, speaking on a topic of special interest they choose. Together, Torch members exchange knowledge. New perspectives often result from the ideas in a Torch paper. Torch club meetings offer superb opportunities to advance, confirm or challenge opinions held by members.
All local Torch clubs are affiliated with the International Association of Torch Clubs, Inc. (IATC) with 51 clubs in the U.S. and Canada. The IATC provides services to local clubs, sponsors an annual convention and publishes the award-winning magazine, The Torch.Torch clubs offer a dynamic platform for reasoned discussion where members present and discuss stimulating topics including current events, history, folklore, advances in science and technology, significant contributions to philosophy and the arts, and much more. Our members have a broad range of experience that creates an intellectual buffet of diverse viewpoints and marvelous opportunities for lifelong learning for the fun of it.
