Sunday, September 22, 2024, 1000 - 1700
Defying the Nazis: Artemis Joukowsky shows and speaks of the film he made w/ Ken Burns and Tom Hanks.
10 AM he speaks on "The Liberation of the Human Spirit," lessons from his grandparents. 3 PM he shows the film about them: "Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War," (80 min.) with Q and A afterwards.
Both events free of charge.
The film and book of the same name is about Joukowsky's grandparents, a minister and a social worker, who answered their church's call to leave their young children behind in Wellesley, and risk entering soon-to-be-invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. They stayed and worked secretly under Nazi occupation to save hundreds of threatened refugees, including young children.
Mr. Joukowsky first became aware of his grandparents' courageous work when he interviewed his grandmother, Martha Sharp, for a ninth-grade homework assignment. Eventually, with help from staff at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., he went through 14 boxes of documents his grandmother had collected. This resulted in a book, a movie shown on PBS, school curricula, and digital augmented reality and virtual reality experiences and other media. Some of the young children whose names were found in the boxes and who had been saved, are now older adults who appear in the film.
Lifelong devotion to his grandparents' story and its lessons has given Joukowsky's life focus. As he told an audience at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, his grandmother helped him forget his own medical challenges and concentrate on helping others.
UU Falmouth is at 840 Sandwich Road, East Falmouth.
