Christmas at Meadow Garden
Friday, December 6, 2024 -- Saturday, December 7, 2024, 1800 - 2000
Join us for candlelight tours of a National Historic Landmark. Meadow Garden will be decked out for the holidays as we honor all those who fought far away on Christmases past.
Walk through the period rooms where the Waltons gathered for the holidays more than 230 years ago and explore our American story. Throughout the last 250 years, Christmas has always meant so much to those stationed far away and those on the home front. During the Christmas season in 1778, George Walton fought the Battle of Savannah before being injured and captured as a prisoner of war. Ten months later, George was released and returned to his unit, but on a trip to visit her family, George's wife Dorothy was captured at sea by the British and held through the Christmas season. After frightening holidays spent apart during the Revolution, Christmas must have been so important to George and Dorothy. This holiday, we celebrate all those who sacrificed their time with their families to keep others safe. Poppies in the Augusta Room will commemorate the Christmas Truce of 1914 during WWI where unofficial ceasefires brought moments of peace during a time of war. In the Signers' Room, we will remember WWII soldiers who listened to I'll Be Home for Christmas while they dreamed of being with their loved ones. We hope you can join us!
