Capuchin Christmas
Sunday, December 10, 2023, 1530 - 1900
Join us for the inaugural Capuchin Christmas, a festival of lessons and carols, on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Milwaukee's historic St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Capuchin Christmas features scripture readings chronicling the story of humanity's redemption in Jesus Christ, followed by singing and prayer. The music is performed across a variety of genres and styles, including 19th-century European carols, gospel and other styles, reflecting the remarkable richness and diversity of Christian worship.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m., with the program starting at 4:00 p.m. A festive social follows the program in the adjacent Capuchin Center with refreshments and holiday snacks.
This year marks the 800th anniversary of the first Nativity scene in recorded history when St. Francis celebrated Christmas Eve Mass in the town of Greccio, a day's journey on foot from his hometown of Assisi, Italy. St. Francis asked that a creche be built for the Child of Bethlehem, and an ox and a donkey be brought to complete the Nativity scene.
"The saint of God stood before the manger, uttering sighs, overcome with love, and filled with a wonderful happiness."
- Thomas of Celano. First Life of St. Francis, 85.
There is no cost to attend, but free-will donations are welcome.
