In the Garden of the Zodiac Gallery

The Garden of the Zodiac Gallery is pleased to present World Peace by Alicia Sancho Scherich, an exhibition featuring this Bellevue artist's series of 18 large-scale paintings, progressing over a fourteen-year period inspired by Mother Teresa. This cycle of works in oil on linen reveals the artist's inquiries into aspects of humanity, whether celebrating its highest spiritual and creative orders or exposing its basest instincts.

Gravitating toward the communication of complex subjects in visual form, Sancho Scherich began in 1988 to create the conceptual program for the large panels that would speak to such rangy topics as peace and disruption on earth, science and technology, and the arts. The goal, for the artist, was to make a depiction of the "creative and destructive nature of Man." Each panel has an overarching theme, such as "Universal Love," the first in this suite inspired by Nobel Prize winner and humanitarian Mother Teresa. "Sunset on Wildlife" and "No More in My Name" address man's inhumanity to both creatures and people, while "Breaking with Oppression" and "Love Victorious" reveal hope and redemption for society. Realistically and vividly rendered, each canvas features an array of portraits and other figurative symbols that expand on Sancho Scherich's imaginative visual allegories.

Alicia Sancho Scherich was born in 1934 in Madrid, Spain. She graduated from the Institute of Professional Teaching for Women in Madrid with a degree in fashion design, sewing and cutting as well as doll and toy making and design. Sancho Scherich also studied drawing with her father, an accomplished artist and professor of drawing at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. Married to an airman, she came to the United States in 1960 and settled in Bellevue. She continued her art studies and became recognized for her portraiture, some of which hang in the WoodmenLife Tower and College of Saint Mary, but it was her later experience studying at Creighton University with Professor John Thein that opened her to the artistic journey represented in this exhibition. In addition to her paintings in private collections, Sancho Scherich's work has been shown at Creighton University, as well as in a locally touring exhibition of Three Generations of Spanish Painters at Mutual of Omaha.

World Peace by Alicia Sancho Scherich opens with a reception on the evening of June 6, 2024, and runs through August 4 in the Garden of the Zodiac Gallery, 1042 Howard Street. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 8:00pm and on Sundays from noon to 6:00pm.
