ASU Prep Academy Reimagines High School with First-Of-Its-Kind Hybrid Program on ASU Tempe Campus
Monday, February 10, 2025, 1700 - 1830
A revolutionary high school experience that puts students in control of their own learning is coming to Tempe, Arizona. ASU Prep Tempe, powered by The Levitt Lab, prioritizes purpose over grades, passion over pressure and progress over conformity. Located in the heart of ASU’s Tempe campus, the tuition-free public school is now enrolling students in grades 9-12 for fall 2025. Families interested in exploring enrollment for fall can attend an information session at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10 on the ASU Tempe campus.
The Levitt Lab — created in partnership with renowned economist, author and professor Steve Levitt — is a hybrid learning model that allows students to learn at their own pace, giving them creative license and agency to follow their passions. The mastery-based approach is accelerated and personalized with seminars and wonder sessions that build curiosity and critical thinking. Educators mentor, coach and inspire, while students gain skills that prepare them for real life and real-world applications. Additionally, students can earn college credits through ASU’s concurrent enrollment program, getting a head start on higher education and career pathways.
A one-of-a-kind school, ASU Prep Tempe, powered by The Levitt Lab, offers a reimagined version of high school with a simple purpose: awaken the natural wonder within every student, nurture their curiosity, and empower them to think critically, act boldly and lead confidently. The Levitt Lab was born out of the idea that education needs to fundamentally change today so young people can flourish tomorrow.
“As a father and as an educator, I have seen firsthand how our education system fails students,” said Steven Levitt, founder of The Levitt Lab and author of Freakonomics, an award-winning book that explores the riddles of everyday life and inspired a podcast, blog, radio network and more. “By obsessing over grades and traditional curricula, we fail to cultivate the curiosity and creativity that kids need to thrive in our rapidly changing world.”
The Levitt Lab employs an interdisciplinary, curiosity-driven approach to learning, reflecting the expansive nature of a college education and equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in higher education. This unique design fosters independence, allowing students to manage their own schedules and learning, much as they will in college. The first Levitt Lab, created in partnership with ASU Preparatory Academy, opens in Tempe, Arizona, in July 2025.
ASU Preparatory Academy is chartered by Arizona State University and serves more than 7,000 students across its network with innovative approaches to curriculum that prepare all students for success in graduating from a university. Its mission is to design new models for educational success and raise academic achievement for all learners. ASU Preparatory Academy has schools in Phoenix, South Phoenix, Mesa and Casa Grande; ASU Prep Digital+ serves hybrid students in grades 9-12; and ASU Prep Digital serves online students for grades K–12 in Arizona and around the world.
