A Wampanoag Cultural Experience, Kids Teaching Kids, Wampanoag children share their culture Aug 13
"Kids Teaching Kids" event, Wampanoag children share their culture: singers and dancers, food tastes, games, canoe burning, story-telling, Tuesday, August 13, 5 to 8 PM, at Waquoit Bay Reserve.
This L.I.N.K. event, free of charge, provides an opportunity for young and old to experience the beauty of the Wampanoag culture. Now in its second year, "Kids Teaching Kids" celebrates the Wampanoag culture through the eyes of the children. Wampanoag children are among the teachers, sharing their culture with non-Native kids -- traditional dance, regalia, games, story-telling, mushoon (canoe) burning, doll-making, beading, Wampanoag food. The event brings together Native and non-Native, children and adults, to engage in a fun-filled, educational experience. It takes place in a beautiful outdoor setting on the cliffs of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve,131 Waquoit Hwy, East Falmouth, MA.
The program, the seventh in the "2024 Educational Series," is sponsored by L.I.N.K. (Linking Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Knowledge) in collaboration with UU Falmouth Congregation (Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth). The Series is supported by The Fund for Science, The Falmouth Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation, and Cape and Islands United Way. Held monthly, the free series covers a range of topics chosen in consultation with Elders and teachers in the Mashpee and Aquinnah Tribes. L.I.N.K.'s is to raise awareness among Cape Cod residents of the Wampanoag people as the Indigenous people of the land; their culture; and the hard realities of their history.
This event is a collaboration between L.I.N.K. and the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal members. Sponsors of the event include the Mashpee Cultural Council, the Falmouth Cultural Council, Mass Cultural Council, the Falmouth Fund, the Fund for Science, and St. Barnabas Church.
More information is available at L.I.N.K.'s website, linkcapecod.org and at uufalmouth.org. (Future events in the educational series will be held from 1 to 3 PM on the following Saturdays: September 7 and 28; October 26, November 30, at UU Falmouth.)
