Michael Messer has a career spanning more than four decades. His reputation as one of our leading slide guitarists, songwriters, innovators and producers of roots and blues music are well known. Johnny Cash was a fan of Michael's music and wrote the sleeve notes for his trio collaboration album "Rhythm Oil". The only other artists Cash did this for were Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson. Michael's album "Second Mind" marked him as one of the trailblazers of the 21st century blues sound. Michael Messer's Mitra album "Call Of The Blues" also broke new and unique ground by playing an exhilarating and accessible fusion of rural blues and Indian classical music. While Michael has held slide guitar masterclasses and weekend events for many years, this is a rare opportunity to dig into the creative side of his work and learn how he writes, arranges, produces, records, and of course, how he plays slide guitar. Michael is a unique artist whose creativity lives in the moment.
Chaz Jankel came to prominence in the 1970s as the co-writer and arranger of Ian Dury and The Blockheads albums, "New Boots and Panties" and "Do It Yourself" The arrangements fused Dury's lyrics with Chaz's love of American soul and funk, creating stone cold classics "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll", Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" and "Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 3", to name a few. With these albums Ian Dury and The Blockheads carved themselves a place in music history. Chaz Jankel went on to sign a four album deal with A and M Records in the US that spawned a number one dance hit with "Glad To Know You" and "3,000,000 Synths". In 1981 Quincy Jones recorded Chaz Jankel's song "Ai No Corrida" which became a number one single. Chaz has written scores for several films including D.O.A. and his unique talent has put him alongside some of the great musicians and writers of our time. Chaz Jankel has released ten solo albums and written numerous songs.
Earlier this year Michael and Chaz released their highly acclaimed debut album "Mostly We Drive": https://li.sten.to/mostlywedrive
What the industry say...
"The quality of their writing and playing is exceptional - they are both masters at their crafts - and the end result is an album of many highs and no lows. The music just flows easily" - Music News
"Michael Messer and multi-instrumentalist, Blockhead Chaz Jankel, are two blues makers, two masters of their craft. Messer has a wry flair for inventive rhyme - 'nest of vipers' rhymed with 'stereotypers' and 'can't concentrate' with 'before I dehydrate'. The songs allude to Greta Thunberg, then quote Leadbelly singing about the bourgeois. Music, myth and magic, 'fish eye, snakeskin and bones'. It's a continuity passed down the bloodline through this ocean of time" - Andrew Darlington - R and R Magazine
"Oh what a recording this is! Two musicians totally in tune with each other and playing the most delightful and engaging music I've heard since Duane Allman sat down with Eric Clapton over 50 years ago. You'll not find a more relaxed and intuitive recording ever" - Mark Ringwood - Artistic Director - WEMSFEST Roots Around The World
